Although daunting on first mention, roofing is pretty simple if you do not suffer from vertigo. Like all exterior projects you will have obtain a valid permit license and follow regulations set by local building authorities.
Start at the lowest point of the roof slope near the drip edge and work your way up in rows. Roll out your first felt row nailing it in at required places. Overlap the second layer a few inches onto the end of the first row to ensure a snug fit. Lay out shingles in a clever order nailing them every five inches along the way.
Overlap the first row slightly with the shingles forming a grid pattern to avoid any gaps or cracks. After you finish one side of the sloping roof, lay the ridge shingles again in an overlapping manner.
Approach the other side in the same way ending at the ridge.

Tarred and graveled roofs are expected to last for at least 20 years after they have been installed eliminating almost all the possibilities of leaking roofs. Make sure the roof is clean and free of drastic depressions. Wear knee caps to avoid accidents and lay out the felt or tar paper evenly and spread the tar with a mop or trowel. Once you are done with a row cover with the second sheet of felt before the first tar layer dries.
Repeat the process on the second row and so on until you have all the area covered up leaving vents, pipes and skylights. Two tar and felt coats are enough for regions that experience less rain or snowfall.
Once all the levels are complete start applying tar again from the starting point covering with gravel instead of felt as you go along. Ensure that the gravel is broadcasted evenly.
